Urea, like Glycerin is found naturally in the skin and forms part of the “Natural Moisturizing Factor” (NMF), a compound of substances which are responsible to retain and bind moisture in the skin.

Folklore is rich in references to the healing properties of urea. The Babylonians of about 800 B.C. are known to have used it.

Urea promotes hydration by increasing skin's water binding capacity and decrease water loss from skin's surface. It also helps to dissolve rough and dry skin through keratolytic (softens horny layer) action.

Urea is an excellent choice for dry and ageing skin and in particular to smooth thickened skin on feet and for the treatment of rough, dry and cracked heels.

Glycerin (vegetable based) is available naturally in vegetable oils and can also be the byproduct of soap making. Glycerin is found naturally in the skin and forms part of the “Natural Moisturizing Factor” (NMF), a compound of substances which are responsible to retain and bind moisture in the skin.

Young and healthy skin is normally well hydrated and contains enough natural moisture retaining and binding substances (NMF). Mature and dry skin does not produce enough of these elements and therefore requires moisture offered from the outside of the skin and products to retain the moisture in the skin.

It has strong water-binding properties, enhances the flexibility of the skin and when used with vegetable oils and Phytosteroles helps to regenerate the skin. It penetrates deep into the Epidermis and acts as a moisture depot. Because it penetrates so deep it can hardly be washed out when the skin gets into contact with water.

Glycerin also helps to strengthen the skin barrier – It increases the thickness of the epidermal layer and improves the barrier function. This means that the harmful chemicals stay out of the skin and moisture stays in.

Since Glycerin is part of the “body-own” substances it is very compatible to the skin.

Aloe Vera is recognized as an effective aid in healing almost any type of burn or wound. It can help replenish the skin with moisture and foster cell regeneration. It has proven to accelerate healing because among other things it has the ideal polysaccharides necessary for the skin to repair. Aloe Vera contains over 75 different nutrients beneficial to the skin including vitamins, minerals, enzymes, sugars, anthraquinones or phenolic compounds, lignin, saponins, sterols, amino acids and salicylic acid.

Natal Mahogany – Mafuru Butter is rich Palmitic Acid, Oleic Acid and Linoleic Acid. Palmitic Acid represents the largest proportion of fatty acid in the outside layer of the epidermis (Stratum Corneum). Since the Palmitic Acid production in our skin declines with age, Natal Mahogany Butter is very useful for mature and dry skin, which needs nourishment and moisture. It penetrates and hydrates the skin quickly providing the important fatty acid needed and firms the cell membranes. It also reduces the trans-epidermal water loss.

Sage (Salvia officinalis) delays ageing of the skin by preventing wrinkles and fine lines. It also helps treat acne, skin blemishes, eczema, psoriasis, athlete’s foot and cracked skin. Sage has antibacterial properties that are effective in deodorant, and bath to treat sweaty feet.

Yarrow (Achillea millefolium) One of the oldest healing plants. Yarrow's high azulen content (which gives it its powerful anti-inflammatory action) is even higher than Chamomile. Azulen also gives Yarrow anti-infectious properties for treating infections.  It is ideal for oily and problem skins.

Marshmallow (Althaea Officinalis) Due to its content of mucilage, flavonoids and anthocyanidins it is a soothing and healing herb with moisturizing properties. It is very helpful for treating eczema, boils and slow-healing wounds. Marshmallow smooths wrinkles. Ideal for dry, sensitive skin. Recent research proved that it’s capable of speeding up cell regeneration.

Comfrey (symphytum officinale) has more mucilage than marshmallow, which is why it has a softening effect in skin. Its outstanding skin-healing properties make it an invaluable herb in skin care.
